How do you make a printable paper toy?

Short answer

Decorate the toy in 3D first, then print. Paper Critters shows you the critter as a solid object you can turn while you add shapes and stickers, and only flattens it to a printable sheet when you are done — so you are never guessing how a flat template will look folded. One ordinary page, cut, fold, finished.

Decorate in 3D, not on a flat net

The usual papercraft workflow hands you an unfolded net and asks you to picture the result. Most people cannot, and find out only after cutting. Paper Critters inverts it: you work on the assembled toy, turning it as you go, and the flattening happens at print time.

That is the whole difference between a craft that works with a seven-year-old and one that ends in a crumpled sheet.

The print step

One page, ordinary paper, an ordinary printer. Thicker paper folds more crisply if you have it, but nothing about the sheet requires it.

Cut along the outlines, fold on the creases, tuck the tabs. There is no glue-heavy assembly and no second instruction sheet to lose.

Ordinary printer paper works and is easier for small hands to fold; card stock holds its shape better and is harder to crease cleanly. With a young child, thin paper and a second attempt beats thick paper and a first failure.

Doing it without a connection

The studio keeps working offline once it has loaded, so the decorating half of the activity survives a car journey or a patchy connection. Installing it gives it an icon and makes that reliable.
